Sensational Summer in the Gardens

It’s a beautiful day in the Promise Gardens as we get closer to fall foliage season. The blooms and color are fabulous and although we anticipate the beauty of fall foliage, we will dearly miss the glorious colors and blooms of spring and summer. We made several changes in the gardens this year and the new plantings and additions will be amazing next year. A sensitive plant in a garden grew,
And the young winds fed it with silver dew,
And it opened its fan-like leaves to the light,
and closed them beneath the kisses of night.
~Percy Bysshe Shelley,
“The Sensitive Plant,” 1820

A Beautiful Ride with Flowers

As you might have guessed from my new banner, I have completed the garden bicycle and it is exactly what I anticipated it to be…simply lovely!  As I blogged on my design in earlier posts of “Promise Garden Color Guide” and “A Lovely Ride” the flower bicycle is a favorite focal point for the 2012 Rose & Flower Show with lots of exclamations of “wow” with praise and “I want one”!

A few notes:  My final decision was Turquoise as the color for the bike (see Color Guide link above) and Purple for the Herb Tricycle (photos forthcoming).  The flowers will grow out and cascade over the bicycle in several weeks which will enhance it even more.  I used many different annuals and perennials that trail, cascade and give an ever-blooming display.  Watch the blog for more on the bikes, trikes and potting tables.  The slideshow gallery for the 2012 Rose & Flower Show will be posted soon.   Be inspired to create and happy gardening!!

Spring Garden Planning

It’s that time again gardening friends to plan your gardens for 2019 season.  We are creating many new garden beds, moving plants to new locations and the favorite part of it all is choosing beautiful new plants from the plethora of gorgeous ones available to us.  This year we will be adding to our four rose gardens new antique, English and modern roses with colorful new borders.  For our original Promise Garden on the rock hill where Lydia lives and oversees, we will plant many new flowering bulbs and low-growing flowering ground covers.  This are  just a few of the additions to the 2019 Promise Gardens so an inspiration storyboard was in order.  As all good gardeners say, “it is never too early to plan for our gardens” and “you can never have too many garden beds and flowers.”  We wish you inspiration and happy planning your gardens for 2019!  #Jacy JoyPals  #PromiseGardens

A Path In The Woods

“Any patch of sunlight in a wood will show you something about the sun which you could never get from reading books on astronomy. These pure and spontaneous pleasures are ‘patches of Godlight’ in the woods of our experience.”
― C.S. Lewis

The Virginia Arboretum is always a favorite place for photography in any season but especially in the Autumn season.  Whether you photograph nature’s beauty in full display or create photographic abstracts from the season delights, it is a season of anticipation and satisfaction and completion with a treasure trove of beauty. @jacyjoypals

The Gardener

The Gardener

The gardener does not love to talk.
He makes me keep the gravel walk;
And when he puts his tools away,
He locks the door and takes the key.

Away behind the currant row,
Where no one else but cook may go,
Far in the plots, I see him dig,
Old and serious, brown and big.

He digs the flowers, green, red, and blue,
Nor wishes to be spoken to.
He digs the flowers and cuts the hay,
And never seems to want to play.

Silly gardener! summer goes,
And winter comes with pinching toes,
When in the garden bare and brown
You must lay your barrow down.

Well now, and while the summer stays,
To profit by these garden days
O how much wiser you would be
To play at Indian wars with me!

Heart Happy Yellow Peonies

The Promise Garden is lighting up every day with flowering peonies and nothing makes our hearts happier than seeing this beautiful “smiling-at-us” yellow peony in full bloom.  We call the yellow peony our “Happy Peony” because every time one blooms we burst out with joy and a huge smile.  You can see why we love them so much.  -Happy Gardening!
