I collect seeds from various “famous” gardens and old farms/towns, etc. See my Hollyhocks posts here for the “historic holllyhocks” that burst forth all over our area in the summer. Watch for the new postings of our newest hollyhocks.

The photos above are from my 2008 gardens.  They are much more abundant in 2012.   The recent Derecho (storm) in Virginia broke most of them to the ground while still in bloom but the seeds, oh yes, the seeds were captured.  Click on image above to see all this Hollyhock post.

I AM a GARDENER!

I am fascinated by the changing colors of the garden from the spring pastels of flowering trees and bulbs to the deep reds of roses to the deep emerald green of Arborvitae, I am capturing them with my eye and camera.  I cannot quite decide what I like best, the soft pastels or the deep primary colors or a combination of both so it is determined that I just love them all, in all colors, shades, and in all sizes and shapes because  I AM a GARDENER!

Pastel Garden Loves:  This image depicts my “softer side” and photographed when the buds were beginning to open rendering lovely and varied shades of orchid.  Total color awesomeness.  It has blessed my soul today as the arborist prepares for removing those damaged trees and debris that are hanging 100 ft. above me so that I cannot even get into the “Secret Garden” part of the gardens.  I shall photograph them as they work and share with you.

Promise Garden Color Guides

The Promise Garden color scheme for the 2012 Rose & Flower Show is taken from the image below and the beautiful image of  Alma-Tadema.  [see posts below]  I created a color guide from the images to show those colors that will be used in the decor, flower pots, containers, hanging baskets, furniture, potting & garden tables, benches and more.   Several of  the statuary will be painted in various hues of these colors as well.  The large Lydia in the main Promise Garden is already in the beautiful color of turquoise with silver overlay (images forthcoming).  I will also add shabby chic furniture and draping in off-white.  The secret garden and shabby chic gardens will also have other variations of the colors from this scheme. I am inspired!  I hope it inspires you for your gardens as well.

The Perfume of Lilacs Inspire Me

My lilacs this year are breathtaking…five beautiful large trees brimming with all the shades of lavender, purples, pinks and white that only God good embellish.  How lovely they are in the gardens and how beautiful and aromatic in the home.  They inspire me in color, perfume and design.  This year’s Promise Gardens theme colors were inspired by these shades.

WITH LILACS

I BEG the pardon of these flowers
For bringing them to one whose hair
Alone doth shame, beyond compare,
The sweetest blooms of richest bowers.

I beg the pardon of this maid
For offering them with hand less pure,
A heart less perfect, needing cure
By Love’s own music, softly played

Garden Design & Secret Places

Working on designs for the Promise Gardens this week, I have been on a quest to find doors and gates I like to pull together a new design that would incorporate all of the elements including a door to the secret garden.   Each of these have at least one element I love and will incorporate into the new secret garden design.

It’s Tuscan…enough reason in itself!  You know about their gorgeous gardens.

Artistic design in this gate…butterflies drawn to a garden make it complete.

Color and color that draws you in with a “wow” makes a statement in the garden.

Whimsy! No garden is complete without a little whimsy.

Hardscape and stone:  Required elements in every garden, the older the better.

Now on to the drawing board to create. I hope this inspires you to create beauty for your gardens too! Come and see me at @Pinterest and the lovely pins for gardening ideas will inspire you.

Happiness is a Garden Cart

This is a tool that every gardener needs.  Forget old wheelbarrows (which we now use for planters) and buy one of these.  I just purchased my second cart.  I now have one for planting/feeding gardening chores and one for serious garden hauling.  It is so handy when you have to move around a large garden and gives you everything at easy reach and that is gardening happiness indeed.

The cart is available at Lowes, Home Depot and Tractor Supply stores.
