The Rose of Promise Gardens

Happy Rose Gardening!

It’s that time again as we prepare for our Rose & Garden Show 2019.  A few favorites from the past.

In our eyes, nothing is more beautiful than the blooms of roses and peonies…our favorites! So then, a few rose delights for the eyes and thoughts for the heart!

A White Rose

THE red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
O the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.

But I send you a cream-white rosebud
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips.

John Boyle O’Reilly. 1844–1890

The Gardener

The Gardener

The gardener does not love to talk.
He makes me keep the gravel walk;
And when he puts his tools away,
He locks the door and takes the key.

Away behind the currant row,
Where no one else but cook may go,
Far in the plots, I see him dig,
Old and serious, brown and big.

He digs the flowers, green, red, and blue,
Nor wishes to be spoken to.
He digs the flowers and cuts the hay,
And never seems to want to play.

Silly gardener! summer goes,
And winter comes with pinching toes,
When in the garden bare and brown
You must lay your barrow down.

Well now, and while the summer stays,
To profit by these garden days
O how much wiser you would be
To play at Indian wars with me!

Beautiful Container Gardens

hangingbasketcontainer
It’s “Beautiful Container Garden” time now that the weather has warmed for those luscious annuals and colorful annuals/tropicals. This image serves as fun new inspiration in the gardens. I have included my former “Beautiful Container Gardens” post as well for our new gardening friends. Get inspired from the Southern Living Container Gardening link for your new containers. There is much to be gleaned there. Our new ones are forthcoming on the blog when rain and wind stop to design them. Have a happy container hunt and design!   Be sure to read my post below for tips and more.

Do you love container gardening?  Looking for a way to beautify your gardens with your favorites and keep the critters out?  Do you have limited garden space?  If you answered yes to these questions, consider the wonderful ways you can dress up your gardens, porch, deck, patio and more with a plethora of different plants and flowers in containers.  I have always loved them because I love vases filled indoors and urns outdoors so they were a sure bet for me in my Promise Gardens.  I have everything in them from roses, flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals, tropicals and more.  In the summer, I fill large containers with tomato, squash, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers and herbs.  All of these plants and vegetables grow beautifully and they are easy to water, feed and protect from disease and insects.  They are just the best and their use and creativity is limitless.

This container and its twin sit in “pie-shaped” twin gardens on each side of my porch stairs.  They contain floribunda roses, perennials, annuals, grasses, trailing vines and many other plants.  Each year I choose different plants and create a new look for the season and transfer the previous years plants to the main Promise Gardens to spread and supply me with future container plants.  It is pure joy to create and photograph them and during our flower and garden show to share them with friends and family.

One of the first questions I am asked about the containers when folks come to visit the gardens or see photographs of them is “how do I create them?” and where can they learn to do it.   I share my favorite books and sites with them (see links on tab above).  My favorite container gardening book is P. Allen Smith’s “Container Gardening” and was the inspiration for my twin containers above.    You can visit his website to see photos, videos and recipes for container gardening.  The book is a “must-have” for your gardening bookshelf and will inspire you to create beautiful containers for your home and gardens.

We will be sharing many of our container photographs and recipes over the seasons.  Be sure and come back and visit us.  Happy Container Gardening!

Promise Garden Color Guides

The Promise Garden color scheme for the 2012 Rose & Flower Show is taken from the image below and the beautiful image of  Alma-Tadema.  [see posts below]  I created a color guide from the images to show those colors that will be used in the decor, flower pots, containers, hanging baskets, furniture, potting & garden tables, benches and more.   Several of  the statuary will be painted in various hues of these colors as well.  The large Lydia in the main Promise Garden is already in the beautiful color of turquoise with silver overlay (images forthcoming).  I will also add shabby chic furniture and draping in off-white.  The secret garden and shabby chic gardens will also have other variations of the colors from this scheme. I am inspired!  I hope it inspires you for your gardens as well.

…Inspiration in Art to the Gardens…

Beautiful inspiration for garden planning is to spend a leisurely stroll online viewing beautiful art for color, composition, perspective and placement of objects.  The gorgeous art of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema serves as a wonderful inspiration for me and I am fascinated by the pastel colors in his work.  I have used “like”color in my home.  As I complete the designs for the gardens, I will use the colors in this wonderful work for one of my floral displays.  Picture it… baby blue skies, purple, orchid, lavender, yellow, mauve, cream, shades of green.  Isn’t it lovely?  Are you inspired to create your own garden color inspirations?

Garden Design on my Mind…

I am in the city this week but the Promise Gardens are not far from my mind.  I am so excited about the recent finds to complete the new Secret Garden and Shabby Chic outdoor studios.  The bicycle posted below became a quest for me and at the most unexpected place, I found the perfect bicycle.  I will not describe but will surprise you when completed and in its proper place in the gardens.

Colder weather has brought low temps at night but the roses are screaming to bud and I believe they will be earlier this year.  Did you see them last year?  Here’s an image from one of the rose gardens last year which I have uploaded to my Pinterest.  This is the antique rose garden and the wonderful Rosa Munda has preeminence.
