Spring Promises & Morning Sunshine

It’s Spring Time again!  We will soon be sharing our lovely gardens with you again!  Until then, Happy Spring Gardening!

We are out and about on this lovely day watching the tulips and bulbs pop out everywhere.  Soon we will have the incredible beauty of them!

A little remembrance… How wonderful to see the sunshine this morning after drenching rains yesterday which watered the gardens so beautifully and the flowers just popped out with joy, the leaves drinking up each drop and of course, most importantly, the roots just as happy as can be.  How precious is the rain and sunshine to the gardens…very…and they show their appreciation by happiness in color, buds and giving joy to their caretakers.

This is another image from the Promise Gardens Spring & Summer photoshoots. The plants (common name) are from left to right: Tulips, Mock Orange, Rose of Sharon, Peony, Hollyhock.

Notes:

  •  Tulips: Everyone loves tulips, a must have in your spring garden/planters.
  •  Mock Orange:  An amazing bursting forth each spring of incredible white  flowers with glorious aroma.
  • Rose Sharon:  Breathtakingly beautiful and each year more abundant.
  • Peonies:  No garden is complete without an array of peonies.  The yellow is new to our gardens this year…sensational!
  • Hollyhock: The “red” hollyhock is a favorite and just breathtaking in the garden.  We have both single/double and prefer the historic “single” version.  These are heart stopping!

Beautiful Container Gardens

It’s “Beautiful Container Garden” time now that the weather has warmed for those luscious annuals and colorful annuals/tropicals. This image serves as fun new inspiration in the gardens. I have included my former “Beautiful Container Gardens” post as well for our new gardening friends. Get inspired from the Southern Living Container Gardening link for your new containers. There is much to be gleaned there. Our new ones are forthcoming on the blog when rain and wind stop to design them. Have a happy container hunt and design!   Be sure to read my post below for tips and more.

Do you love container gardening?  Looking for a way to beautify your gardens with your favorites and keep the critters out?  Do you have limited garden space?  If you answered yes to these questions, consider the wonderful ways you can dress up your gardens, porch, deck, patio and more with a plethora of different plants and flowers in containers.  I have always loved them because I love vases filled indoors and urns outdoors so they were a sure bet for me in my Promise Gardens.  I have everything in them from roses, flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals, tropicals and more.  In the summer, I fill large containers with tomato, squash, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers and herbs.  All of these plants and vegetables grow beautifully and they are easy to water, feed and protect from disease and insects.  They are just the best and their use and creativity is limitless.

This container and its twin sit in “pie-shaped” twin gardens on each side of my porch stairs.  They contain floribunda roses, perennials, annuals, grasses, trailing vines and many other plants.  Each year I choose different plants and create a new look for the season and transfer the previous years plants to the main Promise Gardens to spread and supply me with future container plants.  It is pure joy to create and photograph them and during our flower and garden show to share them with friends and family.

One of the first questions I am asked about the containers when folks come to visit the gardens or see photographs of them is “how do I create them?” and where can they learn to do it.   I share my favorite books and sites with them (see links on tab above).  My favorite container gardening book is P. Allen Smith’s “Container Gardening” and was the inspiration for my twin containers above.    You can visit his website to see photos, videos and recipes for container gardening.  The book is a “must-have” for your gardening bookshelf and will inspire you to create beautiful containers for your home and gardens.

We will be sharing many of our container photographs and recipes over the seasons.  Be sure and come back and visit us.  Happy Container Gardening!

Beautiful Creation, Beautiful Blooms

As I gaze in awe out of my windows at the Promise Gardens today, the sun is shining brightly and I am anxious to get out there and shoot those beautiful blossoms in all the trees and capture them up close with the macro lens. I usually do not photograph during bright sun but the reflections are just glorious so I am out the door into the gardens to shoot.

Promise Gardens

On another note, we continue the mega spring garden cleaning and guess what had stored itself in my porch potting table? Yes, that’s right, a huge squirrel nest, yikes, it was just awful. The Robins and Cardinals have nests everywhere including the arbor (which, of course, we did not touch). Another surprise, I had put a clay pot container under the large potting table and covered it with another pot upside down thinking to use the good soil this year. Lo and behold, I remove the cover and what is there but three very yellow-leaf-looking hyacinth bulbs climbing for life? Wow, I repotted them and they are happily doing well.  Did I mention the rabbits digging holes and dropping little ones?  What else will we find? Scary thoughts!

Welcome December

A Day in the Life #21The Promise Gardens finish their season with amazing colors and surrounded by beautiful foliage to close out November.  Preparations for the winter gardens is underway with a new theme this year.  It doesn’t have to be a bare bones garden over winter but interesting and beautiful treatments to cheer in winter can be added with a backdrop of glorious white snow.  Until then, the last look at the November foliage before the wind carries all of the foliage away.

O Beautiful Spring Basket…

…from the Promise Gardens.  Spring has surely sprung!  As you see, the spring flowers have tempted me to create many lovely arrangements for the spring photoshoots.  I am always in awe of the rich colors and uniqueness of each flower and leaf.  Lilacs, hyacinth and bulbs create a spectrum of delight!  I wish you were here to take in the sight and aroma!  It’s breathtaking!
